About this tool

The choice of format depends on how you'll use the result. MP3 is compatible with virtually any device. M4A offers better quality at the same file size, and it's the default recording format on most phones. WAV, uncompressed, is the right choice when the audio will be edited afterwards.

For transcription, the choice matters little: an MP3 at 96 kbps is perfectly valid. For music or repeated edits, WAV is the only option that loses nothing in the process.

Features

  • Three formats and four quality levels available, avoiding repeated conversions.
  • An additional «no conversion» option that extracts the audio without re-encoding: instant and lossless.
  • WAV is generated at 16 bits and 44.1 kHz, the standard any editor expects.
  • Supports containers the browser doesn't play natively, such as MKV or AVI.
  • The file isn't uploaded or stored on any server.

How it works

  1. 1

    Upload the video

Any usual container. The file isn't transmitted to any server.

  2. 2

    Choose format and quality

MP3 for maximum compatibility, M4A for better quality, WAV for later editing.

  3. 3

    Download the audio

Keeps the original file name with the new extension.

In detail

How to choose a format based on later use

If the audio will only be listened to, MP3 is the right choice: it's compatible with virtually any device. If it will be opened in an editor — Premiere, DaVinci, Audacity, podcast editing software — WAV is preferable, since being uncompressed it withstands trimming, mixing and re-exporting without accumulated loss.

M4A is the middle option: at the same file size it offers better quality than an MP3, thanks to a more modern codec, and it's the default recording format on most phones. Its only drawback is compatibility with older software. For transcription, all three formats are equivalent: what matters is that the voice is clear, not which container it comes in.

The files a browser won't play on its own

An MKV from a camera, an old AVI, or an FLV from various sources won't play natively in a browser. This doesn't mean the file is damaged: browsers include a limited number of decoders, and these formats aren't among them.

This tool processes them anyway, because the engine running in the tab is a complete ffmpeg, the same one used by desktop conversion software. It reads the container, locates the audio track and extracts it even when the browser can't display the video.
